Tiny hands and feet change so quickly in those first precious weeks. Taking prints at home can feel messy and stressful, but with the right setup you can create beautiful keepsakes without the frustration.
There’s something incredibly special about tiny baby hands and feet. They change so quickly in those first few weeks and months, which is why keepsake prints have become such a meaningful way to capture those little details forever.
If you’ve ever tried taking baby hand and foot prints at home before, you’ll probably know it can quickly become messy, stressful and far more difficult than expected. Wriggly babies, smudged prints and ink-covered fingers are usually part of the experience.
The good news is that there are simple ways to get beautiful prints at home without turning it into a full afternoon disaster.
💡 Babies are often most relaxed straight after feeding or during nap time.
Our Favourite Tips for Taking Baby Prints at Home
Step 1: Wait Until Baby Is Calm or Sleeping
The best time to take prints is usually:
after feeding
during nap time
or when baby is sleepy and relaxed
Trying to take prints when babies are wide awake and kicking tends to make things much harder.
Step 2: Use Gentle Pressure Rather Than Pushing
A common mistake is pressing too hard. Instead, gently guide the hand or foot onto the paper using soft, even pressure.
For footprints, it often helps to support the heel first and slowly roll the foot downward.
When removing the hand or foot from the paper, try to lift straight up rather than dragging or twisting. This helps reduce smudging and keeps the print clearer.
✨ Tiny imperfections are often what make baby prints feel the most real and meaningful years later.
Step 3: Don’t Worry About Perfection
Tiny creases, slightly curled fingers and natural imperfections are all part of what makes baby prints feel real and personal.
Sometimes the slightly imperfect prints end up becoming the most treasured.
If you’re ordering one of our personalised foil keepsake prints, don’t worry if there are small outside smudges or tiny imperfections around the edges. We can usually tidy and refine the prints digitally while still keeping the natural detail and character of your baby’s real hand or foot print.
Step 4: Take Multiple Photos of the Prints
If you’re using one of our personalised foil keepsake prints, we recommend taking a few clear photos of the best prints in good natural light.
This gives us the best chance of creating crisp, detailed artwork while preserving the true size and delicate detail of your baby’s hands and feet.
Different Types of Baby Ink Kits
Not all baby print kits work in the same way, and some are much messier than others.
Some kits require ink to be applied directly onto your baby’s hands or feet, while others use an ink pad hidden underneath a protective layer. Although these are often described as “mess free”, they still contain an exposed ink surface inside the pad itself, which can sometimes transfer ink accidentally during use.
Our kits use an inkless wipe and reactive paper system instead.
Simply wipe your baby’s hand or foot using the specially designed wipe, press onto the reactive paper, and the print gradually develops afterwards. There’s no open ink pad, no direct ink applied to the skin, and no need to press down onto a hidden ink surface.
Many parents find this method:
- easier to use
- less stressful
- cleaner
- and more suitable for wriggly newborns
It also makes it much easier to take multiple attempts without worrying about excess ink or cleanup afterwards.
✨ Many parents choose to turn their baby’s prints into foil keepsakes before the original prints naturally fade over time.
Preserving Your Baby’s Prints for Years to Come
Many baby print kits naturally fade or discolour over time. This is completely normal and happens gradually as the print reacts to light and air exposure.
Because of this, many parents choose to turn their baby’s real prints into personalised foil keepsakes, helping preserve those tiny details in a more permanent and display worthy way.
By professionally transforming the prints into foil artwork, the original hand and foot details can be captured and enjoyed long after the original reactive prints may have faded.
Why Parents Love Foil Baby Keepsake Prints
Traditional paint prints are lovely, but foil keepsakes create something a little more timeless and elegant.
Our personalised foil prints are designed to feel like a special piece of artwork for your home rather than something that gets tucked away in a memory box.
Each design is personalised with your baby’s details and professionally foiled in our West Wales studio using real metallic foil.
Popular choices include:
baby name and birth detail prints
newborn hand and foot prints
sibling foil keepsakes
scan photo keepsakes
gifts for grandparents
A Meaningful Gift for New Parents and Grandparents
Personalised baby prints also make incredibly thoughtful gifts.
They’re especially popular for:
first Mother’s Day gifts
new grandparents
baby showers
christenings
newborn keepsakes
memorial keepsakes
Because every print is personalised, each piece becomes completely unique to that family.
For some families, these prints also become deeply treasured memorial keepsakes. We’re honoured to have created foil prints using hand and foot prints taken in hospital, helping families preserve those tiny details in a gentle and meaningful way during incredibly difficult times.
